Wed, 13 May 2009 00:49:18 -0700 ANC Youth League Release http://nairobinotes.posterous.com/anc-youth-league-release http://nairobinotes.posterous.com/anc-youth-league-release

HELEN ZILLE CONTNUES TO EXCEL AS NUMBER ONE RACIST AND DISTRACTOR OF GENDER STRUGGLES:

12 May 2009

The ANC YL is disgusted by remarks attributed to the racist girl Helen Zille, who when failing to defend her stupid and sexist decision to appoint predominantly white males into her cabinet, attacks the President of the Republic of South Africa. The ANC YL calls on Helen Zille to respect the office of the President of the Republic of South Africa and stop making stupid and degrading remarks against President Jacob Zuma. Zille has appointed an all male cabinet of useless people, majority of whom are her boyfriends and concubines so that she can continue to sleep around with them, yet she claims to have the moral authority to question our President.

If the fake racist girl Zille continues to speak hogwash like she has been doing during elections, we will take militant action against her, and demonstrate to her that she does not have monopoly over the Western Cape. The fake racist girl who was dropped on a head as child should understand that South Africa will never be a Mickey-mouse Republic like she wants to portray it. An absolute majority of South Africans support President Jacob Zuma and will find it very disgusting for a fake racist apartheid agent to continue undermining the highest office in South Africa.

Tue, 12 May 2009 05:38:00 -0700 DDT - What the heck is up with the UN? http://nairobinotes.posterous.com/ddt-what-the-heck-is-up-with-the-un http://nairobinotes.posterous.com/ddt-what-the-heck-is-up-with-the-un

I find this supremely confusing.

Last week, the UN announced a plan to rid the world of DDT by 2020. According to the Ethiopian Daily Monitor, the announcement came from UNEP and the WHO.

Meanwhile, it looks like DDT spraying is going on, if not with UN approval, then right under their noses. From this week's OCHA Ethiopia Humanitarian Bulletin:

... According to information received from the Welayita zone health department, approximately 77,830 clinical cases of malaria have been reported in Boloso Sore, Damot Fulassa, and Bolos Bombe woredas over the last four weeks. Similarly high cases are reported in Gamo Gofa zone, Konso and Burji special woredas. The Regional Health Bureau is trying to address the situation and DDT spraying is underway. UNICEF dispatched 4,500 Rapid Diagnosis Test and provided technical assistance to the RHB to support the bureau in controlling the situation.

Who's doing the spraying? It's unclear. Maybe I'll shoot an email to the WHO.

but most of the country is pretty much the same.

"it's very hard to learn computers in a country where the university
has considerably less technology than the wealthy individuals who can
afford it. For example, I traveled to an internet cafe to type this
because the ones on campus (30 cents an hour) were all full. This one
is a DOLLAR an hour. And it's not even that fast."

"HELP. i can't speak swahili OR english."

Liberian Coworker:That's because we didn't sleep.
Me: Eh?
LC: A big rumor went around that caterpillars had overtaken Monrovia. Many persons across Liberia woke up.
Me: That sounds crazy.
LC: The rumor said water supply would be contaminated by dawn. Another version said  it's a prophesy that water be blood the next day. I thought it would be crazy. But children and women leaving their houses in search of water supply as early as 1 am. The government had to send out Bropleh, the information minister, to radio stations. So that's why I am in early.

Tue, 09 Dec 2008 07:21:00 -0800 Gates and Global Health Reporting http://nairobinotes.posterous.com/gates-and-global-health-report http://nairobinotes.posterous.com/gates-and-global-health-report The Gates Foundation is giving away a bunch of money to media organizations for global health reporting. It seems like a step in the right direction, but I do hope that more of the money ends up with African media organizations. It's not just that African media houses need to be doing more of this critical reporting, but that they need to be doing it better. Still, who wants to send over millions of dollars to a media outfit anywhere without a guarantee that it will be used properly?

The good news is that it might be easier to reach out to media owners across the continent thanks to the (soon-to-be) annual African Media Leaders' Forum. At their inaugural meeting this year, some of Africa's most powerful media executives - including the Nation Media Group (Kenya-East Africa), Mail & Guardian (South Africa), and ThisDay (Nigeria) agreed to work together to push for more international recognition. I'm not overly optimistic about the ability of all of these big wigs (who will, if they are successful, possibly end up in competition with each other). But imagine - a one-stop contact point to reach Africa's most influential media types. It could end up being quite a powerful organization.

Some organization exists, but most of it seems pretty weak, or simply out of touch. The African Press Association is essentially just a tool for distributing press releases. And it's based in Switzerland. Really useful. On the country level, national press organizations tend to operate as labor unions and end up being highly political and tightly controlled by whoever wins that all important election. (See the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, or SLAJ, for a good example of how ridiculous the infighting can get. The Concord Times of Freetown has been covering the association's elections like it's more important than the national presidency.)

I took the (US) Law School Admission Test here on Saturday. It was unlike any other standardized testing experience I've had. I don't think I scored very well. At points, I was shoving my fingers in my ears to try to hear myself think. Pretty sad, considering that I was taking the test with just one other person (a fellow in the Peace Corps who, interestingly, speaks Kalenjin). Some of the highlights:

  • Large framed photo of test proctor with Daniel Arap Moi and George H.W. Bush (nice!)
  • Daladalas matatus driving by with super bass and tinny treble choruses (mostly your standard U.S. hiphop)
  • As the evening wore on, we were treated to a truck driving around the block with loud music, including "Bembeleza" (a song I actually quite like under normal circumstances), and unforgettably, the "Numa Numa" song. Oh, and loudspeakers. It sounded lke a crusade was going on outside.
  • During the break, our test proctor talked a lot about how one famous media personality here was a "dog." Oh, and she also told us that someone once jumped out the window and committed suicide during this exam. She seems like a real character.

Anyway, there's no way I performed optimally on the test, but I'll wait it out and see in January.
